Special Issue

03/04/2021: After a successful first edition, I am renewing my position of Guest Editor for a Special Issue on “Photoactive Materials: Synthesis, Applications and Technology (Second Volume)“, in MDPI Materials. Link

This Special Issue will cover any material that interacts with the
light electromagnetic field and modifies either their own
properties or those of the field. Including:

  • Nonlinear optical material (Kerr, two-photon
    absorption, saturable absorber),
  • Photorefractive materials (crystal, polymer, hybrid).
  • Photochromic materials (glass, azo-dye, chromophore).
  • Spectral and orientational hole-burning.
  • Plasmonic and photonics material and structures (optical nano-antenna, active nanoparticles).
  • 2D material for optics (graphene, RGO, MoS 2 , WS 2 ).
  • Metamaterials (negative index, gradient index, optical cloaking).
  • Magneto-optics material (high Verdet constant, optical isolator).
  • Material for quantum optic (single photon emitter/detector, quantum state storage, nonlinear processing).

02/24/2021: R.S. Ketchum; P.-A. Blanche, “Diffraction Efficiency Characteristics for MEMS-Based Phase-Only Spatial Light Modulator with Nonlinear Phase Distribution“, Photonics 2021, 8, 62. Link

In this new article, we explain how to optimize the diffraction efficiency of a new type of MEMS phase modulator manufactured by Texas Instruments. This can find application in 3D display, HUD, LIDAR.

02/12/2021: Craig T. Draper and Pierre-Alexandre Blanche, “Examining aberrations due to depth of field in holographic pupil replication waveguide systems,” Appl. Opt. 60, 1653-1659 (2021). Link

In this article we are explaining why the image is doubling when projected at at different distances in waveguide combiner, and more importantly, how to solve this problem. This has applications in HUD and augmented reality systems

Feature issue

02/01/2021: Juan Liu et al., “Digital Holography and 3D Imaging 2020: introduction to the feature issue“, Appl. Opt. 60, DH1-DH2 (2021). Link

The Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) and Applied Optics (AO) have just published a Joint Feature Issue expanding on material presented at OSA’s 2020 Digital Holography and 3D Imaging Conference (DH), which was held virtually 22-26 June 2020. The articles included cover major research topics in holography, including digital holography, holographic imaging, holographic measurement, holographic display, holographic deep learning, and other novel techniques. Born out of necessity because we were not finding any algorithm robust enough for unwrapping our experimental data, we created our own and verified its performance.

01/27/2021: My editorial for the Special Issue: Photoactive Materials: Synthesis, Applications and Technology of MDPI Materials has been published. Link

I would like to thank all the authors that participated in this Special Issue, as well as the people I interacted with at MDPI for their help with the editorial process.

01/06/2021: Pedro Enrique Alcaraz and Pierre-Alexandre Blanche, “Advanced volume holographic filter to improve the SNR of polychromatic sources in a noisy environment,” Opt. Express 29, 1232-1243 (2021)Link

In this article, we are demonstrating how to use holograms to select light sources according to their distance. Useful to see through scattering media such as for doing astronomy observation in broad daylight, seeing through the atmosphere.

This article, in collaboration with Navair, contains measurements that are useful to calculate the effect of the temperature on hologram recorded in the Bayfol photopolymer. We provide the thermal degradation, the CTE, and the index change with temperature.
