Homework 5

Read the article “Photo Fakery“.

(1) Surf the web to find an example of a photographic fakery (film or digital) that you find particularly interesting.

  • Write a paragraph or two describing the fakery. Discuss the “who/what/when/where/why/how” information about this particular fakery.
  • Include a printout of the picture.

………. OR ……….

Create your own fake photo, using whatever techniques you are familiar with (printing of film, digital, etc.)!

  • Write a paragraph or two describing the fakery. Discuss how your created your fakery.
  • Include a printout of the picture.

(2) The primary mirror in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is 2.4m in diameter, and the f-number of the overall telescope is 24. Calculate the focal length of the HST.

(3) Assume that you are outside at night, staring up at the very dark sky. You are dark-adapted, and the diameter of the pupil in your eye is 7mm. Given this, how much more light does the HST gather, compared to your eye looking at the night sky?

(4) The Hubble Space Telescope is of a Ritchey-Chretien design, which we may think of as essentially a Cassegrain. Therefore, is the HST secondary mirror concave or convex?

(5) Visit the Center for Creative Photography (on campus, the building just north of Harvill). The entrance to the Center is on the west side, facing the pedestrian walkway that goes underneath Speedway. Admission is free, and the Center is open from 9:00am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday, 1:00pm-4:00pm, Saturdays and Sundays.

(The exhibition area is to the right of the lobby, just before the front desk. Note that you are not allowed to take backpacks into this area–free lockers are provided to store them while you visit. However, I would encourage you to have a notebook with you, to take notes as you view the photographs.)

► Browse any/all of the pictures in the exhibitions. Find the one that really “speaks to you.”
(NOTE: You MAY NOT use any of the pictures found on the Center for Creative Photography’s website!!)

  • Write at least 1/2 page telling me why and how this particular photograph has meaning for you.
  • Write down the title and any other identifying information about the photograph.
