POC: Stephen Sproull

  • NSWC Crane is looking for an optical scientist and/or engineer to assist with optical design tasking. Primary tasking will include assisting with: ingesting vendor design files for analysis, generating system designs for both research projects and updating current systems, and design consultation. Potential secondary tasking includes opto-mechanical design, benchtop optics setup of devices for test and evaluation, and scripting/programming of custom design tools. Optical component design will include conventional optics, freeform optics, meta-/diffractive optics, and gradient refractive index (GRIN) optics.

  • Necessary Capabilities
    • Proficient with basic optical design methods and at least one ray tracing design software package
      • Ansys Zemax OpticStudio
      • Ansys SPEOS
      • Synopsys CODEV
      • Synopsys LightTools
      • LightTrans VirtualLab Fusion
      • Beam4
    • Competent in MATLAB
    • Competent in Microsoft Excel
    • Competent with mathematics including higher order polynomials and integration
  • Desirable Capabilities
    • Familiarity with opto-mechanical design/CAD software
    • Familiarity with benchtop optics
    • Familiarity with computer scripting/programming (C++ or similar)
    • Familiarity with physical optics design (FDTD, RCWA, other propagation simulation methods)
