Homework 3

(1) Look at the sundial located in front of Flandrau Planetarium:

  • Write a paragraph describing what you see there.
  • Use the projected shadow to tell the time. Compare to the “more accurate” time on your watch, phone, etc.
    • How accurate was “shadow-time”?

Enter our building to answer the next 3 questions!

(2) Wander the hallways of Optical Sciences to observe the Laser Warning signs on most of the doors of our research labs:

  • Find 3 lasers that emit visible light. For each one, answer the following:
    • What is the wavelength of the emitted light?
    • What is the power of the laser?
    • What is the Class number of the laser?
    • What is the room number of the lab?
  • Find 3 lasers that emit infrared light (λ > 700nm). For each one, answer the following:
    • What is the wavelength of the emitted light?
    • What is the power of the laser?
    • What is the Class number of the laser?
    • What is the room number of the lab?

(3) Look at the “Desert Flower” sculpture in our lobby.

In a paragraph, describe how it works to produce the image of the flower!

HINT: Think “TIR” and how a kaleidoscope works 🙂

(4) Look at the 100-year old studio camera in the tall glass display case in our lobby.

  • Is the image that you see on the back of the camera real or virtual?
  • Describe how the image relates to the object (the real-world scene out in front of our building).
