About Zygo

For more than 50 years, Zygo Corporation in Middlefield, Connecticut, has been a global leader in advanced optical metrology systems, ultra-precise optical components, and electro-optical systems. Our instruments serve customers in semiconductor manufacturing, precision machining, optical manufacturing, and consumer products.

Who We're Looking For

We expect to hire several full-time scientists and engineers in 2027. We also want to fill summer internships in both R&D and engineering. We're interested in BS, MS, and PhD students, although not every opportunity is open to every degree level. We want people who:

- Love learning and enjoy working across optics, mechanics, electronics, and software

- Have a strong foundation in geometrical and physical optics

- Enjoy hands-on lab work, including alignment, troubleshooting, and data analysis

- Are comfortable with mathematics and quantitative problem solving

- Communicate clearly and work well in multidisciplinary teams

Areas of Interest

  1. Research and New Technology Development

Develop new metrology technologies and show that new ideas work through theory and experiment. Best suited to PhD or MS students with a solid foundation in optics and strong experimental skills. Experience in interferometry or precision engineering is a plus but not required, as are publications or patents.

  1. Optical Systems Engineering (multiple openings expected)

Design, integrate, and test displacement measuring, Fizeau, or white light interferometers. Grow into owning requirements, interfaces, error budgets, and tradeoffs. Open to all degree levels. Looking for working knowledge of lens design and familiarity with optical and electronic lab instruments.

  1. Applications Engineering

Serve as a customer-facing technical expert: run measurements and demonstrations, solve customer challenges, train users, and find new applications. Open to all degree levels. Looking for experience with metrology or optical systems, excellent communication skills, programming experience, and willingness to travel.

  1. Summer Internships – R&D and Engineering

Spend a summer doing hands-on research, development, or engineering work in optical metrology.

Helpful Skills (not required)

Interferometry, Zemax/OpticStudio, tolerancing, Fourier optics, polarization, radiometry, stray light, MATLAB or Python, statistics and measurement uncertainty, optomechanical design (SolidWorks), and systems engineering.

If you're curious, persistent, and excited about precision measurement, we'd like to meet you.
