Job Summary

General Atomics – Electromagnetic Systems (EMS) has an exciting internship opportunity for Undergraduate or Graduate students in the field of Opto-Mechanical Engineering.  General Atomics is a leader in optical and mechanical engineering intensive systems.  Selected candidates would be given the opportunity to learn and contribute to the development of electromagnetic systems, high energy lasers, advanced sensors, space, and nuclear systems solving real world problems with high tech tools.

Selected candidates would perform under limited supervision, working on non-routine projects with general instruction and advanced projects with detailed instructions:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Participates in the day-to-day activities in opto-mechanical engineering department supporting the design and development of high energy laser systems, sensors, space and nuclear systems.

  • Duties will typically include one or more of the following: creating mechanical designs, drawings, or analysis of mechanical components in airborne, terrestrial or space systems.
  • Will be required to summarize work in technical reports and provide presentations to team leaders and management.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Desired Skills: Mechanical analysis, design tools, rising Senior year student, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
  • Requires active enrollment and currently attending as an undergraduate student at a recognized college or university.
  • Applicants who will have completed their undergraduate degree by the time the internship program would begin, must be planning to continue in a graduate program immediately following the conclusion of the internship program.
  • US Citizenship is required.
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred.
  • Knowledge and class work in Mechanical Design, Optical Systems, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Fluid Flow and Solidworks are desired.
  • Ability to understand new concepts and apply them accurately.
  • Ability to follow general and detailed instructions as well as organizational policies and procedures.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to enable effective interface with internal professionals.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Basic computer skills.

This position pays at an hourly rate of $29.00 - $31.00/hr., depending on your specific field of study and the number of college years completed.
