Job Summary and Essential Job Duties: The Metrology Engineer works within a dynamic team to see customer requests through from inception to final product. This role is responsible for assessing the feasibility of final and interim metrology needs in relation to the manufacturing process and final product requirements. The engineer will interface directly with customers, internal engineers, quality control, and technicians to meet and document part specifications based on customer prints and optical standards.

Through On the Job Training (OJT) and Experience, the Metrology Engineer will:

  • Assess feasibility of metrology needs for complex manufacturing processes.
  • Interface with customers and internal teams to define and document specifications.
  • Set up and operate advanced optical metrology instruments, including:
    • Fizeau, White Light, and Stitching interferometers
    • Optical Profilometers and Autocollimators
  • Apply knowledge of Optical test setups (e.g., Ball Test), TWE, and CGH.
  • Perform Uncertainty Analysis (e.g., GUM) and develop Error Budgets.
  • Analyze data using PSD, Fourier, MSF, and Slope analysis.
  • Utilize contact profilometers (e.g., CMM, AFM) and design metrological fixturing.
  • Inspect and document in-process optics for conformance to mechanical and optical drawings (ISO 10110).

Education Requirements:

  • BS, MS, or PhD required in Optical Science & Engineering or Optomechanics.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Hands-on proficiency with common optical metrology instruments.
  • Fundamental knowledge in an applied manufacturing setting regarding tolerancing and statistics.
  • Proficient in Design of Experiments (DOE) and Round Robins.
  • Capability to perform Uncertainty Analysis and Error Budgeting.
  • Excellent communication skills for interfacing with customers and technical teams.
  • Analytical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of understanding and interpreting blueprints for both mechanical and optical standards (ISO 10110).

Other Skills and Experience:

  • Strong understanding of the relationship between metrology and manufacture in optics.
  • Proficiency in data types, sampling, filtering, fitting, and interpolation.
  • Strong multi-tasking skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Initiative and mental concentration to learn new complex techniques.

Work Requirements: Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.
  • The job may involve prolonged periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.

Work Environment:

  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud frequencies.
  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.
  • Generally, works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes.
