Cow Eye Dissection
Overview: See up close the layers of a cow’s eye. The cow eye is structurally and functionally similar to a human eye. By dissecting a cow eye we can learn about our own eyes and how their structure allows us to see the world the way we do. All the layers and parts work together to take incoming light and produce images for our brain to process.
Supplies: Cow’s eye, scalpel, exam gloves, paper towels, plastic bag
Objectives: Gain a better understanding of the layers of an eye and how the eye works.
Setup:
- Review instructional video
- Put on your gloves
- Spread the plastic bag out mostly flat and lay the eye inside the bag under the camera. This makes cleanup quick and easy.
- Get your scalpel ready
How to run the demo:
Know your eye anatomy! Follow the procedure in the video, dissecting the eye one layer at a time. Be enthusiastic! Answer questions as they arise. Allow the audience to come up after the demo to see and/or touch the parts up close if they so desire.
