For full credit, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>show the hour markings on your sundial<\/li>\n<li>set up and align your sundial to show the class that it actually works!<\/li>\n<li>answer the following questions:\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">In a sundial, what is the gnomon?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>How many degrees does the sun move across the sky, in 1 hour?<\/li>\n<li>What is the latitude of Tucson?<\/li>\n<li>What is the &#8220;Equation of Time&#8221;?<\/li>\n<li>On the day that you&#8217;re going to show us your sundial, what is the time-correction to your sundial using\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">the &#8220;Equation of Time&#8221;? (HINT: See the curve in the Wikipedia article below, and find an on-line\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em; line-height: 1.6em;\">&#8220;Day of Year Calendar for 2015&#8221;)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Suggestions and hints:<\/h3>\n<p>You may make your sundial out of any materials that are cheap\/free and easy to use (paper, plastic, cardboard, string,\u00a0straws, chewing gum, etc.)&#8211;it doesn&#8217;t have to be made of marble and brass!<\/p>\n<p>Some very useful web references on sundials include:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sundial\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sundial<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sundials.co.uk\/projects.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.sundials.co.uk\/projects.htm<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sundials.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/sundials.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;..but there are MANY OTHERS! &#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the easiest sundial to make is one that has the hour markings equally-spaced, known as an &#8220;Equatorial Sundial.&#8221; (The sundial in front of Flandrau Planetarium is known as a &#8220;Horizontal Sundial&#8221;\u00a0and is even easier to make&#8211;plant a stick in the ground and locate its shadow. However, if you noticed on the sundial in front of Flandrau, the hour-markings are NOT evenly-spaced, making them much harder to mark on\u00a0the sundial you build.
