We have a wonderful opportunity to view a total (!) Lunar Eclipse this Sunday night, here in the desert southwest.<\/p>\n
At 5:11pm, the moon will enter the shadow of the Earth (however, the moon will still be below the horizon here in Tucson).<\/p>\n
The “full eclipse” begins at 7:11pm, at which point the moon will be visible from Tucson. (“full eclipse” means the edge of the moon will first enter the umbral shadow of the Earth…)<\/p>\n
Maximum shadow-coverage (“totality”) occurs at 7:47 pm here. At this point, the moon will be completely within the umbral shadow of the Earth!<\/p>\n
(1) Observe the eclipse for a period of (at least) one hour. Make a drawing of the shadow cast on the moon, and write
\ndown your observations of the moon for that time.<\/p>\n
**** Do this every 15 minutes, ……etc. for a total of 5 drawings and observations.<\/p>\n
(2) Explain the phrase “Blood Moon”!<\/p>\n
