The Optical Technology Division (844), part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/physics.nist.gov\/\">Physics<\/a>\u00a0is where most of the good stuff is. Check out the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/physics.nist.gov\/overview\/div844bro.html\">overview of Optical Technology<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/physics.nist.gov\/StaffOrg\/div844\/div844.html\">staff (good guys)<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/physics.nist.gov\/TechAct\/Div844\/div844.html\">Technical Activities rundown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NIST also has laboratories located in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boulder.nist.gov\/\">Boulder<\/a>, Colorado, where laser power and energy and related technologies and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boulder.nist.gov\/div815\/Calibrations\/Calibrations.htm\">calibrations<\/a>\u00a0are housed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>National laboratory activity is certainly not confined to the USA. Lots of good stuff happens in Canada, UK, Europe, Australia &amp; New Zeeland, South Africa, etc. Check out some of these sites.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csiro.au\/\">CSIRO<\/a>\u00a0Australia<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npl.co.uk\/\">NPL<\/a>\u00a0United Kingdom<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca\/index.html\">NRC\u00a0<\/a>Canada<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptb.de\/\">PTB<\/a>\u00a0Germany<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nist.gov\/index.html\">NIST\u00a0<\/a>has some other good links as well.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Here are some other great links for the broad field of optics.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The oldest society in the USA devoted to optics is the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.osa.org\">Optical Society of America<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 It is an excellent starting point for further WWW exploration in optics.<\/li>\n<li>No less important, but with an engineering emphasis is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spie.org\">SPIE- The International Optical Engineering Society<\/a>. It also has extensive references and can take you far.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ieee.org\">Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)\u00a0<\/a>is quite active in lasers, opto-electronics and electro-optics. Visit them soon!<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cie.co.at\/\">International Commission on Illumination<\/a>\u00a0is active in photometric and lighting issues, publishing many documentary standards that are extremely useful.<\/li>\n<li>In the infrared region of the spectrum, the INFRARED INFORMATION ANALYSIS CENTER (<a href=\"http:\/\/csdnta.erim-int.com\/IRIA\/\">IRIA<\/a>) is a good place to turn for pertinent information.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/badlink.jpg\" width=\"70\" height=\"18\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ieee.org\/organizations\/society\/leos\/\">LEOS<\/a>\u00a0is the Laser\/Electro-Optical Society affiliated with IEEE.<\/li>\n<li>Optical Illusions are accessible here.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"images\/badlink.jpg\" width=\"70\" height=\"18\" border=\"0\" \/><\/li>\n<li>A bunch of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/focus.hut.fi\/fos\/otherlinks.html\">optics links<\/a>\u00a0are available from our friends in Finland.<\/li>\n<li>Yahoo has a specific category devoted to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/Science\/Engineering\/Optical_Engineering\/\">Science:Engineering:Optical Engineering<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>There are several resource pages devoted to color. Try one of these: Colorpro or light-link..<\/li>\n<li>A starting point for the study of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vision.arc.nasa.gov\">human vision<\/a>\u00a0is located at NASA\/ARC.<\/li>\n<li>For a good time, check into sci.optics, sci.eng.color or sci.eng.lighting and help out a beginner (or be one!)\u00a0 I try to check in several times a week to help others or run down some tidbit.
